Less well known is that the 12 signs are further subdivided into 27 segments of 13☂0’, referred to as nakshatras. Similarly, the Moon is also placed in any one of these 12 signs of the zodiac. Most of us are familiar with our Sun sign, indicating in which of the 12 signs of the zodiac we were born. The potential effects of a dasa can be judged according to its ruling planet and its position in the natal chart. There are nine planets, referred to as Grahas, each ruling a specific dasa: the seven classical planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn), plus the Moon’s nodes, Rahu, the north node, and, Ketu, the south node. This length of time is then divided into 9 different planetary periods, or dasas – each associated with a planetary ruler and its corresponding characteristics.
